A good rear light is just as important for your safety on the bike as the front light, as it makes you visible to anyone riding behind you. The same applies here: riding in the dark without adequate rear lighting is not only dangerous, but also against the regulations.
As a manufacturer that has been ensuring that you are more visible on your bike for over 100 years, we have summarised everything you need to know about bicycle rear lights. Here you can find out
- what you need to pay attention to in order to be on the road in accordance with regulations,
- what types of rear lights there are,
- what advantages they each have and
- what you should look out for when buying to find the right rear light for you
Cycling according to regulations: These regulations apply to rear lights on bicycles
To ensure that you are visible and safe on the road, you should observe the following regulations - all of which are set out in Section 67 of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO):
- The rear light must have a red light, should have a beam angle of at least 220° and must not be less than 25 cm above the road surface.
- The rear light must not flash, but a brake light function is permitted.
- The rear lights must also be StVZO-approved. You can recognise such devices by the K approval mark, which can usually be found on the housing (a wavy line, the letter K and a number).
- A fine of up to 35 euros may be imposed if these regulations are violated.
By the way, you can be sure: With a rear bicycle light from busch+müller you are always on the road in accordance with the regulations - because all our products fulfil the prescribed traffic standards and are StVZO-approved.
Your rear light - your decision: Which power supply should it be?
When buying a rear light for your bike, you have the choice between different types of power supply: Dynamo, separate battery or e-bike battery. Here you can find out what advantages they each have and which bikes they are particularly suitable for.
Dynamo rear lights
- Permanently installed on the bike
- Draw power from the dynamo - no recharging or battery change necessary
- Light source always available
- Theft-proof
- Often equipped with additional functions
Particularly suitable for: City bikes and trekking bikes
Rechargeable rear light
- Small and light
- Quick and easy to mount
- Can be easily attached to various bicycles
Particularly suitable for: Road bikes and mountain bikes
E-bike rear lights
- Utilise the powerful e-bike battery
- High light intensity and light duration
- Often equipped with special functions
- Greater safety for high speeds
Particularly suitable for: E-bikes and S-pedelecs
Still unsure? Our tips for choosing your ideal rear light:
The choice is huge - but don't worry: with a few specific questions, you can find exactly the right rear light for you and your riding style.
What kind of bike do you ride?
Firstly, you should find out which type of rear light is best suited to your bike and your riding habits.
- City bike or touring bike?
The dynamo rear light is your ideal companion for regular rides through the city or long day trips.
- Sporty on the road?
The flexible battery-powered rear light is best suited to road or mountain bikes. Particularly small and light: our IXXI battery-powered rear light.
- E-bike at the start?
Then it's best to utilise the power from the e-bike battery - with a suitable e-bike rear light.
Do you need special functions?
A good rear light shines - a really good rear light thinks for itself! Many of our models are equipped with clever features that make all the difference:
- Line-Tec: Thanks to Line-Tec, drivers behind you not only see a red dot, but also a clearly visible band of light that allows them to judge the distance to you much better and faster.
- Brake light function: A processor in the rear light recognises when you brake suddenly and warns following vehicles by lighting up. In the event of sudden hard braking, the emergency brake light function is activated: the rear light flashes brightly.
- Automatic sensor: This switches the rear light on automatically as soon as it gets dark or the bike is moved.
- Parking light function: The parking light is charged by the dynamo and continues to light up for some time after you have stopped. This means you are still clearly visible when you are stopped at traffic lights.
What would you like to invest?
Bicycle rear lights are available in different price categories. If you want more than just the basics, you can get the Line Brake Plus dynamo rear light, , which has LineTec and brake light functions, for around €46.
