Striking design

The little red one with a big impact: Find out everything you need to know about the battery-powered rear light for bikes here

A bicycle rear light is like a good bodyguard: usually inconspicuous, but when it comes down to it, it reliably ensures your safety. Bicycle rear lights emit red light to the rear, making you visible to other road users. An invaluable safety feature, especially at night or in bad weather. Rechargeable rear lights are particularly practical and compact. But don't be fooled: The small and lightweight rear lights conceal sophisticated technology that ensures maximum luminosity and many a practical additional function. Take our BRIXXI rechargeable rear light, for example: despite its tiny dimensions, it has an automatic sensor, capacity indicator and brake light function.

Here you can find out what you need to know about rechargeable rear lights and how to find the right model for you:

  • What are the advantages of battery-powered rear lights?
  • What does the StVZO say?

What should you look out for when buying your rear light?

Flexible light sources: the advantages of battery-powered bicycle rear lights

With a rechargeable rear light from busch+müller you are visibly better on the road - and these are its strengths:

  • Low weight
Rechargeable rear lights for bicycles are small and light - on average they only weigh around 30 grams. With the IXXI, you even get one of the smallest StVZO-approved rear lights on the market.
  • Simple installation
Most of our models can be attached to the seat post in just a few simple steps and removed just as quickly and attached to another bike, for example. Our BRIXXI, for example, offers a range of comfort and safety functions and is simply attached to the seat post with an elasticated strap.
  • High light output
Thanks to the built-in rechargeable battery, our bicycle rear lights have a high light intensity and a long light duration. Some models even give you up to 50 hours of reliable rear lighting.
  • Convenient charging
The rechargeable rear lights from busch+müller can be easily charged via USB cable. However, if you prefer classic battery operation without USB charging, we also offer a model for this with the SECULA.
  • Technology from the innovation leader
We know our way around lighting solutions for bicycles - after all, busch+müller has been setting new standards in this field for over 100 years. That's why our products often have functions that are not available from other suppliers. For example, the LineTec lens system, which makes you even more visible to others in road traffic.
  • Reliable and sustainable
We manufacture each of our products in an environmentally friendly and resource-saving manner - regionally at our site in Meinerzhagen and our sister company in neighbouring Wiehl, from the electronics to the housing. This allows us to scrutinise and check every component and every luminaire ourselves - for maximum quality and safety. This is all part of our comprehensive Friendly philosophy, which we apply to all areas of our company.

Battery-powered rear lights and the StVZO

According to the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations, every bicycle rear light - whether with or without a battery - must fulfil certain requirements in order to be approved for use in road traffic.

You should observe the regulations set out in Section 67 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) for a rear light that complies with the regulations. You can find out exactly what these regulations are here.
Good to know: All rear lights from busch+müller are of course StVZO-certified, recognisable by the embossed test mark of the Federal Motor Transport Authority with K, a wavy line and a number - so you are on the safe side with us.

Our buying guide: What you should look out for when choosing a rechargeable rear light

A bicycle rear light must be able to do one thing above all: Of course it has to light up! And with a continuous light, because flashing rear lights are prohibited in Germany.
But that's not all, because brightness alone does not make a really good battery-powered rear light. When buying your model, you should also consider the following points:

Battery life
Everything that has a battery will run out at some point. Therefore, pay attention to how long your light can provide light before it runs out of juice. The longer, the better . In Germany, a minimum of 5 hours is prescribed.

Mounting
On the pannier rack or seat post? With rubber band or bracket? Everyone has their own preferences. The decisive factor is that mounting your rear light is as quick and easy as possible, that it is secure and cannot move by itself.

Waterproof
There is no such thing as bad weather - only bad rear lights: you can get wet on your bike, so your rear light should definitely be splash-proof.

Special functions
Despite their small size, some rear light models have various additional functions, for example

  • Automatic sensor so that the light switches on automatically in the dark
  • Brake light, so that your rear light lights up brightly as soon as you brake.
  • Emergency brake light function, with which your rear light displays a flashing signal in the event of abrupt, heavy braking - incidentally, this is the only case in which a flashing light is permitted in Germany.

Charging
In the best case scenario, your rechargeable rear light can be easily charged using a USB cable. There are also models that require a special charging cable, but who always wants to have to think about the extra cable before setting off?
