More than just a red light: the e-bike rear light and how to find the model that suits you best

A rear light on an e-bike is an absolute must-have. Of course, because following vehicles will not recognise you in the dark without adequate lighting. This increases the risk of accidents - and nobody really wants that. The German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) therefore require clearly visible lighting in poor light conditions and in the dark.

As lighting experts for bicycles, we at busch+müller naturally know what is important when it comes to rear lights for e-bikes. You can find out more below:

  • What the legal regulations for e-bike rear lights look like
  • How to find the right rear light for your bike
  • How e-bike rear lights work and how to connect them to your bike
  • What you should look out for when buying

What can, what must? The legal situation for e-bike rear lights

Section 67 of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) specifies exactly which rear lights are permitted on bicycles and how they must be fitted. You can read about this in detail here. The most important questions for rear lights on an e-bike are:

  • Are rear lights mandatory?
In Germany, rear lights are mandatory on e-bikes in poor visibility and in the dark - otherwise you could be fined.
  • Which rear lights are permitted?
Only StVZO-certified LED rear lights that light up constantly and remain activated when stationary are permitted.
  • Are there different rules for S-pedelecs?
For S-pedelecs, the lights must also be switched on during the day.

The rear light for your e-bike: how to find the right model

Made in Germany quality: We always keep an eye on the durability and performance of all our rear lights. But of course there are differences. When selecting your e-bike rear light, you can use the following criteria as a guide:

Function
The rear lights from busch+müller can do much more than just light up. You have the choice between various additional functions that improve your safety on the E-bike.

  • LineTec strip light:
Creates a uniform band of light that allows other road users to better judge the distance to you.
  • Brake light:
Ensures that your rear light lights up extra brightly when braking and indicates abrupt braking by flashing thanks to the integrated emergency brake light function. For example on the Dart E Brex.

Compatibility
There are many different manufacturers of e-bikes, but they generally use standardised motors from manufacturers such as Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha or Brose. To connect the e-bike rear lights from busch+müller, you therefore only need a suitable light cable for the motor system.

Area of application
Choose a rear light that suits your riding habits.

Are you more of a sporty rider?
Then go for a model that is as small and light as possible. For example, the smallest road-legal rear light [my:] E.

Or do you often cycle through heavy traffic?
Then the large Toplight VIEW E with integrated large-area Z reflector is more suitable for you.

Design
Not exactly safety-relevant, but nevertheless important: the design of the rear light should also match your bike. From the simple 2C E to the stylish Kite E Brex, you are guaranteed to find a model that appeals to you.

Functionality and power supply of e-bike rear lights

A rear light for e-bikes usually uses LED technology, as this is durable, efficient and bright. The rear light is powered directly by the main battery of the e-bike - unlike a battery or dynamo rear light, you do not need to charge it and you are not left in the dark as soon as you stop.

So what do you need to operate an e-bike rear light?

You need for your rear light to work:

  1. A compatible rear light for e-bikes. Note the correct voltage - usually 6V or 12V.
  2. A light output on the e-bike motor or on the display
  3. A connection cable - from the motor or controller to the rear light

Tip: Some e-bike systems provide interfaces, although parts of the fairing often have to be removed first. With some systems, the interface must first be activated by a specialist dealer before connection is possible.

And what do you need to consider when connecting?

The steps for connecting your e-bike lighting vary depending on the motor or lighting system. In general, however, the following applies:

1. identify the power source

  • Usually on the motor
  • Alternatively on the display or controller

2. establish the cable connection

  • Connect the rear light to the light output using a two-core cable (note the positive and negative poles)
  • Special plugs are often required for this

3. activate the system

  • Switch on the light function via the display
  • In some cases, the dealer must activate the light function via the diagnostic tool

4. mounting and fixing

  • Attach the rear light securely, for example to the pannier rack, mudguard or strut. Remember: Two rear lights are prescribed for strut mounting - one on each strut.
  • Lay the cables neatly, if possible protected from the weather and mechanical stress

Important: Observe the voltage specification!
A rear light must match the voltage of your e-bike system. The wrong voltage can damage the rear light or lead to malfunctions.

Are you unsure?
Connecting e-bike lighting is not child's play - if you are unsure about something, ask the expert to be sure or have the installation carried out by a specialist.
