Bicycle mirrors: practical helpers for more safety in road traffic
Rear-view mirrors also make sense on a bike - because they allow you to keep an eye on traffic behind you without having to contort yourself.
However, it is also clear that not all bicycle mirrors are the same. As experts with over 100 years of experience in the bike industry, we'll give you a few tips on what to look out for - so that you can find exactly the right rear-view mirror for your bike and your riding style. You can find out here,
- the advantages of rear-view mirrors on bikes,
- the different variants available and
- the best way to mount your bike mirror.
What are the advantages of bicycle mirrors - and are they compulsory?
In Germany, mirrors are only required by law for fast e-bikes/pedelecs with a speed of over 25 km/h (and motorbikes). The Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) also clearly state that rear-view mirrors for such bikes must have the "E" test mark. Only then are they expressly authorised for fast speeds.
However, bicycle mirrors are also permitted and useful at normal speeds. Here are the advantages of bicycle rear-view mirrors at a glance:
- Better visibility: Even without looking over your shoulder, you can easily keep an eye on traffic behind you. A bicycle mirror makes things noticeably easier, especially for families with children and older cyclists.
- Faster reaction time: You notice approaching vehicles much earlier. Even silent electric cars or cyclists who do not ring their bells can no longer scare you when overtaking.
- Increased safety: Rear-view mirrors on your bike increase your safety - and that of other road users - especially when turning or overtaking.
- Relaxed riding: You always know exactly what's going on behind you, so you can cycle blithely along. You can even keep a heavy e-bike or a fully loaded bike safely on track - and you can easily keep an eye on the kids in the trailer or behind you on a family outing.
Which bike mirror for which bike?

How is a bike mirror attached to the bike?
Depending on the model, rear-view mirrors for bicycles can be attached directly to the handlebars using a mounting clamp or via an adapter inside the handlebars. Both are usually quick and easy to do - but make sure that the mirror is compatible with the curvature of your bike's handlebars when fitting it inside the handlebars. The angle of the handlebars should not be more than 20 degrees.
In addition to correct installation, you should also consider the following points so that you can enjoy your bike mirror for a long time:
- Sturdy construction: ensures that your rear-view mirror doesn't fly around your ears while you're riding and can withstand bumpy terrain.
- Splinter protection: Protects you from injury in the event of a fall by preventing the mirror glass from splintering.
- Good adjustability: This is important so that you can adjust your mirror exactly as you need it for an optimum field of vision.
Left or right: which side should you mount your bike mirror on?
Have you made your decision and found the right mirror? Now the all-important question remains: On which side of your bike should you mount the rear-view mirror?
It's clear: the left side of the road is the centre of attention - at least in Germany and many other countries. On the left-hand side, you will be overtaken by others and if you want to overtake or turn left yourself, you have to make sure that nobody gets in your way. The left is therefore clearly the "place to be" for your bike mirror.
But: An additional second bike mirror can also be useful on the right-hand side of your handlebars - because unfortunately it happens time and again that not everyone adheres to the traffic rules. If, for example, a fast hooligan cyclist thinks he has to overtake you on the right just when you want to turn right, a collision is inevitable. With an additional bicycle mirror on the right-hand side, you can also anticipate such exceptional situations and thus avoid unnecessary accidents.
