Are you looking for a front light for your bike, but have no idea what to look out for? No problem: as experts in bicycle lighting with over 100 years of experience, we know exactly what is important. From the legal regulations to the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of lighting, we'll tell you everything you need to know about front lights on bikes - including helpful tips on what to look out for when buying.
Bicycle front lighting: you should observe these regulations
Anyone cycling in Germany must ensure that they have adequate lighting. This is prescribed by law. So that you don't have to navigate the German jungle of regulations yourself, you can read the regulations here, as set out in Section 67 of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO):
- The front lighting must consist of at least one headlight with a white dipped beam.
- The headlight must be glare-free and must not flash.
- The lighting intensity must be at least 10 lux.
- Bicycle front lights may be operated by dynamo, rechargeable battery or battery.
- Only headlights with a K approval mark are permitted. These devices are officially authorised for use in road traffic. The approval number is usually located on the outside of the housing. You can recognise it by a wavy line, the letter K and a number behind it.
- Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines of up to 35 euros.
But you don't need to worry: All our front lights fulfil the legal standards and are StVZO-approved. No matter which bike light you choose: With us, you'll always be riding properly - as long as you make sure the front light is set correctly and glare-free.
Types of front lighting: advantages and disadvantages
Essentially, a distinction is made between the various front lights based on their power supply: Dynamo, battery or e-bike. We introduce you to the three common types of front lights for bikes, along with their strengths and weaknesses:
Dynamo front lights - the classic
Dynamo front lights are permanently mounted on the bike and connected to the dynamo via a cable. They do not require charging and provide constant, low-maintenance lighting as long as you are pedalling hard and the bike is turning. The illumination intensity of our dynamo front lights ranges from 17 to 300 lux.
Advantages:
- Power from muscle power - independent of sockets and chargers
- Permanently mounted and always with you - impossible to forget at home
Disadvantages:
- Installation is not for the faint-hearted - requires manual dexterity
- Replacement only with appropriate expertise
Ideal for: Cyclists who commute, cycle very frequently or over long distances and who value durability, light duration and low maintenance.
Rechargeable front lights - flexible companions for every bike
Bicycle front lights with battery operation are handy, light and quick to mount on the bike. The illumination intensity of our battery-powered front lights ranges from 30 to 120 lux or more.
Advantages:
- Universally applicable - fit on almost any bike
- Often with USB charging
- Usually offer several brightness levels
Disadvantages:
- No light without regular charging
- Easy to remove - unfortunately also for thieves
Ideal for: Road or mountain bike fans for whom flexibility and low weight are important.
E-bike front lights
E-bike front lights are specially designed to be powered by the powerful e-bike battery. We offer e-bike lights with illuminance levels ranging from 35 to daylight 300 lux.
- Extra bright, extra wide and extra safe
- Often with additional features such as daytime running light, cornering light or high beam
Disadvantages:
- Complex installation: Connection to the e-bike system should only be carried out by a specialist
- Higher purchase costs: Sophisticated technology has its price.
Ideal for: Those who want to ride carefree through the night.
Tips for choosing your bike front light
A front light on your bike is essential, but choosing the right model can be difficult. The following questions will help you find the perfect front light for you:
- Dynamo or rechargeable battery?
Firstly, you should ask yourself: Would you prefer a light that you always have with you and that you don't have to recharge? Then a dynamo light would suit you well - as long as you have a dynamo on your bike. Or would you prefer a flexible light that you can quickly remove, store and even easily attach to other bikes? Then a battery-powered headlight is the right choice for you. Anyone who likes to ride fast and/or frequently in the dark on their e-bike is on the safe side with a special e-bike front light.
- How bright can it be?
Are you often travelling on unlit country roads? Then you need a light with at least 100 lux so that you don't only notice potholes and obstacles when you ride over them. If you tend to ride in the city, front lights with around 30 or 50 lux are sufficient.
Tip
In case you've ever wondered what the difference is between lux and lumen:
- Lumen refers to the amount of light emitted by a source. In other words, what comes out of the lamp
- Lux refers to the amount of light that hits a certain surface. In other words, what reaches the ground.
Do you need special functions?
Some of our front lights come with additional features. For example, if you commute to work by bike and are often travelling in heavy rush-hour traffic, it may be worthwhile having a light with daytime running lights for that extra dose of safety. Or do you tend to do your laps in rural areas, often early in the morning or late at night? Then our front lights with high beam function bring light into the dark and onto the road.
