E-bike front light: If you want to be fast, you need good light

Good lighting on a bike is essential for travelling safely at dusk and in the dark. This applies all the more to e-bikes, as electrically assisted bikes usually travel much faster than normal bikes - and are therefore more easily overlooked by other road users. That's why proper e-bike front lighting is required by law according to the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) and should be at the top of your list of priorities.

E-bike front lights utilise the power supply from the powerful e-bike batteries to provide even and reliable lighting at the push of a button. But bright light alone does not make a good headlight - many models can now do much more than just switch "ON" and "OFF". Whether high beam, daytime running light or cornering light: what used to only be possible in cars is now a standard feature of high-quality bicycle lights.

If you're looking for front lighting for your e-bike but aren't sure how to find the right model for you: We can help you! As bike light experts, we have summarised all the important information about e-bike front lights for you. Here you can find out

  • what regulations there are for e-bike front lighting,
  • how to find the right front light for your e-bike
  • how e-bike front lights work and
  • what you should look out for when buying.

Cycling according to regulations: These are the regulations for front lighting on e-bikes

Cycling safely through traffic is primarily a question of good lights. Because without it, you are quickly overlooked and have no protection on your bike. That's why proper lighting is also mandatory for e-bikes. Proper means in this case:

  • E-bikes must have a lighting system that continues to work for at least two hours even after the motor has been forced to switch off due to the low battery charge level.
  • The lights must be clearly visible and must not be obscured by luggage or other attachments on the bike.
  • E-bike headlights must be approved for road use.
Only devices with the K approval mark are authorised for road traffic.

You can find out which other regulations apply to lighting on bikes here.

Attention: Even stricter regulations apply to S-pedelecs. Front lights for S-pedelecs, for example, also require an ECE approval mark. In addition, the fast e-bikes must also be constantly illuminated during the day.

How to find the right light for your e-bike

Whether you are a commuter, touring cyclist or off-road adventurer - there is a suitable front light for every riding style. But which one is right for you?

If you regularly ride in the dark - for example on the way to work or school - then you need a light that reliably illuminates the darkness. Our IQ-XS E, for example, offers optimum visibility of the road ahead with 80 lux, a large light field and close-range illumination.

Do you tend to be travelling in heavy traffic during the day? Then you should choose a headlight with daytime running light function so that you can be seen better even in bright light - for example our IQ-X E.

Or maybe you love off-road adventures and mainly explore the great outdoors and unlit country roads on your e-mountainbike? Then take a look at our IQ XS E Highbeam: This front headlight for e-bikes has an integrated high beam that allows you to keep an overview even in the dark forest and on confusing routes.

Or do you get on your bike more sporadically and for short distances - for example to go shopping or to visit friends? Then a compact headlight like the UPP E is often enough - affordable, robust and with enough power for everyday use.

How does an e-bike headlight actually work?

E-bike front lights are small technological marvels that reliably provide light and thus ensure your safety. But how does it actually work? And what do you need to bear in mind when connecting and commissioning an e-bike front light?

How e-bike headlights work:

Headlights for electric bikes are usually powered directly by the e-bike battery and can often be conveniently controlled via a display or control unit on the handlebars. Depending on the model, modern e-bike front lights also offer you various additional functions:

  • Sensor function: Switches the light on automatically when it gets dark. Or off when it gets light again. Practical, as you don't need to control your lights yourself.
  • Daytime running light: Makes you more visible even in sunshine with the help of some signalling LEDs.
  • Parking light: Continues to light up even after stopping, as the power comes from the e-bike battery. This makes you highly visible even at red lights or when parking your bike.
  • Close-range illumination: Illuminates the area directly in front of your front wheel so that you can see and react to bumps or obstacles as quickly as possible - for a safe riding experience.
  • Cornering light: Ensures significantly better illumination of the road when cornering without dazzling oncoming traffic.
